AIMS AND SCOPE

Infectious Microbes & Diseases (IMD) is an international open-access peer-reviewed journal that is dedicated to accelerate the dissemination, exchange and utilization of basic, applied and clinical scientific research results related to the field of infectious microbes and infectious diseases.

By utilizing the open-access model, IMD aims to contribute globally to the translation of basic research findings and the evaluation of current and novel treatments, into the promotion of optimal practices for diagnosis and treatment of infections to improve the public health. IMD strives for a rapid review process and only publishes manuscripts of outstanding quality. IMD provides a forum where all researchers, clinicians and policymakers can exchange their ideas and learn about the most accomplished and significant advances in the field.

IMD publishes articles, review articles, guideline articles, letters, case reports, comments and

editorials from all fields related to infectious microbes and diseases, including but not limited to

Basic research on pathogens and medical microbiology

Basic research on infectious diseases

Emerging pathogens and infections

Host-microbe interactions

Microbiota and microbiota disbalance related to infectious diseases and treatment

Epidemiology of infectious diseases

Antimicrobial resistance and novel antimicrobials

Vaccine design, development and evaluation

Genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics related to pathogens and infectious diseases

Neglected tropical diseases and travel medicine

Clinical description of infections

Types of Manuscripts Published

Articles are full-length reports of completed basic, translational or clinical research. Articles should report important, novel and fully completed studies with strong conclusions. There is a maximum length of 4000 words, but shorter articles can also be considered, as long as these are fully completed studies. Preliminary reports cannot be accepted. Articles have an abstract of maximum 250 words.

Review Articles have an abstract of maximum 250 words and a word count of approximately 5000 words. Review articles should not simply summarize information, but also discuss the importance and impact of the data providing a clear view on how these insights have transformed or will transform the infectious diseases field. Authors of review articles are encouraged to include several figures and tables to summarize and visualize data.

Guideline Articles report new or updated guidelines prepared by an international group of experts. Guideline Articles should have an abstract of maximum 250 words stating the need for the new guideline and the main conclusions. Authors of guideline articles are encouraged to include several figures and tables to summarize and visualize the various aspects of the data and the guidelines.

Letters are short discussions based on limited new data that still come to solid conclusions or initiate important new questions. Letters have no abstract and therefore should begin with a short introductory paragraph explaining the background and the rationale for the letter. Letters can only have 2000 words and 4 tables/figures.

Case Reports are short articles reporting about rare medical conditions or occurrences, or cases where a lesson can be communicated. Case Reports should increase awareness of a condition, suggest a reasonable diagnostic strategy, or demonstrate a more cost-effective approach to management. A case report should bring something distinctive to the attention of our specific readership.

Case Reports should be organized in the following way:

The title should be provocative and reflect the value of the case. Since there is no abstract, please start the case report with a short paragraph to provide some background information that frames the importance and relevance of the particular case being presented. Provide a concise description of the patient history, including all facts relevant to the remarkable observation. Key illustrations are highly encouraged. Importantly, inclusion of investigative studies will increase the value of the report. Finally, provide the most current information on the patient's outcome. In the report, avoid inclusion of details that do not increase comprehension of the case. The discussion should aim to extract the main one or two lessons from the case. Include references to other relevant reports, whether they are supportive or contradictory to the current case. Alternative, scientifically-based proposals for management of similar cases can be presented for consideration.

Patient release/permission forms are required at submission for all images showing identifiable features. Physician forms are acceptable. Upload release forms as supplemental files during submission.

Comments are short discussions to be used to describe an own opinion on recently published data in IMD. The authors of the original publication will be contacted for a response, which if accepted, will be published in the same issue as the 'Comment'. Comments have no abstract and should cite the article under discussion.

Editorials are invited articles to explain the importance of specific articles or to provide opinions on general concepts in infectious diseases practice, research or policy. Editorials have no abstract and are typically 1000 words long. Editorials who discuss a recently published article should cite that article as the first reference.

ONLINE SUBMISSION

All manuscripts must be submitted on-line. Once the manuscript has been created, visit the submission site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/imd/ to upload the manuscript. A manuscript number will be assigned to the manuscript after submission. The manuscript will be vetted for compliance to the Journal's requirements. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in your manuscript being returned to you for correction. Faxed, scanned or emailed copies of manuscripts will not be accepted.
